Did you know that National Poetry Month is the largest literary celebration in the world? It was established in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets and is celebrated by millions of people across the globe.

This April, G&P is participating in National Poetry Month in a variety of ways! We kicked off the month with an assembly on Monday, April 2nd. Former Cambridge “Poet Populist” Jean Dany Joachim (jeandanyjoachim.com) shared his poems in both English and Haitian Creole, as well as talked about his life as a poet. Students asked him great questions!

Keep your eyes out for the Poetry Around the World exhibit in the lobby. We invite YOU to share your favorite poem with us and the country it comes from. If your poem was originally written in Arabic, Amharic, Spanish, or whatever your home language is, we would like to have the poem in both the original language and English (if you have both). We will be sending home guidelines on how to contribute a poem soon.

On Wednesday, April 25th, another poet, Charles R. Smith (http://charlesrsmithjr.com/) will visit G&P. Mr. Smith is a children’s book author, poet, photographer, personal fitness trainer and Mixed Martial Arts coach. He will be doing two sessions, one with K-2nd grade and one with 3rd-5th graders, so all students have a chance to engage with him.

Also on Wednesday, April 25th, families are invited to our 4th Annual G&P Poetry Night from 5:30-7PM. Join us for poetry-writing workshops from 5:30-6:15PM. We will then gather in the auditorium for performances by our student poets. Free pizza will be served, first-come, first-served at 5:15PM.

To wrap up National Poetry Month, Thursday, April 26th is “Poem in Your Pocket” Day. Students and adults are invited to bring a favorite poem to school and tuck it in a pocket. We invite you to ask a friend, a classmate, or even someone you don’t know in the school, “Do you have a poem in your pocket?” If the person does, they get to read it aloud to you. And if you have a poem in your pocket, you read it aloud to them! This has been a great way to hear all different kinds of poetry.
